We had been looking for a new flashlight to use at the house and while on camping trips. After reading these reviews here and at other sites, we decided to purchase two of them. Lets start by saying they are very bright. Matter of fact, I would have to say they are brighter than all the others I have used with the exception of those 2 Million Candle powered units. I think the 4 D batteries are heavier than the unit itself. We enjoy having the ability to just sit it on a table and use the side light at our camping table. We hike quite a bit after sundown and needed a flashlight that would provide enough light to light our paths. It took alittle time to figure out the battery installation, but I had to read the manual twice to make sure. It does have a cushioned head on it in case of dropping it, but if it did fall, my guess would be that the bulb would be breaking long before the case itself as it appears to be very well made. 3 year warranty on top of it all and only $ 18 dollars at the time of my purchase.

This is my second Coleman Flashlight and they are great. It is bright and powerful. The batteries last forever as well as the bulbs. The price is a lot cheaper here at amazon then the coleman website.

The only thing that kept me from giving this device a 5-star rating is that it lacks the ability to focus the beam. That aside, this is a well-made, easy-to-operate and reasonably-priced item. I have two of them, one is used when dog walking after dark while its secondary use – as well as the primary use of the other flashlight – is for use in case of an electrical blackout or power failure. Well done, Coleman.

I received a Coleman 4D Dual Action Widebeam Flashlight as a Christnas gift. I found it to be an excellent light. The wide beam illuminated my work items with very little shadowing. The “white light” side works great when I am attaching items to my computer. I dropped the gift about 8 feet onto a tile floor and the flashlight didn’t survive.
I missed that flashlight so much that I had to replace it. And I will store it on the lowest shelf!

This IS the greatest flashlight in the world. Bright W-I-D-E beam in front and the nifty opton of illuminating whatever with the underneath (or side depending on direction of the flashlight) with a bright flouresant light! Sure, its heavy (4 D batteries/not included). Sure its big (so you can find it easily/won’t lose it). SO great the wide flat bottom gives the option of setting it on a flat surface. Real quality. Will last forever.
ONE PROBLEM – very hard to get the batteries in. You’d figure it out after 20 minutes (or more) of swearing at the flashlight, but here you go.
Take a coin and with the edge of it in the slot of the screw, REMOVE the little screw on the underside. Remove it, not just 1/4 turn like the directions say – that won’t work. PUT THE SCREW SOMEPLACE WHERE YOU WON’T LOSE IT.
Then, jimmy the light off the front. Inside there is a panel. You need to “fiddle” with the latch inside/not obvious that it is a latch on the side of this “panel” inside until the thing pops open. Push or pull the little plastic part – the only part that will move at all. There, I think you’ve got it (sorry, lame description)…I’m doing the best I can. You will figure it out.
Put batteries in.
Replace front light/cover and go find that screw. Put that back in.
Be happy.
I am.

GREAT product! We had a power outage last night…and the Coleman came in real handy. Worked perfectly with the Dual Action Widebeam…bright as needed. Installing the 4D batteries was easy too.
I am confident that it will work just fine while camping. Again…GREAT product!

I just bought this product to replace the previous one and also added the Coleman Personal Size Lantern to my order. Here’s my review of the lantern which recommends the Coleman Widebeam flashlight.
————————————————-
I purchased the “Coleman 4D Dual Action Widebeam Flashlight” for $20 at Amazon to replace the same product which stopped working. While I was at it I bought one of these lanterns. I wanted to have a second and decided to try this for variety, instead of two of the former.
Coleman products have served me well and I like both of these products. However, I was puzzled to see that the light was brighter from the large flashlight than the lantern.
Both products have u-tube fluorescent lighting and both require 4 D batteries, but they clearly (to me) are different in their brightness. Since both products cost $20 and the flashlight also offers both a halogen bulb AND the u-tube, I would recommend buying that instead.
Had I never owned the flashlight version I would have rated this 5 stars which is how I would rate the flashlight.
Something to think about if you want a product to get you around your house when the power fails. Coincidentally, 3 days after these Colemans arrived we lost power for 45 minutes and then a week later for 1 1/2 hours (Philadelphia, PA). These are indispensable to me. I don’t do camping but if I did I would still prefer the flashlight for its brighter tube.
Hope this helps you with your decision … Sam

I have one of these stashed in each room and in the trunk of the car. In rolling blackout season you can safely illuminate a surprisingly wide area with one light. They’re very bright and the base is stable so you can easily set them upright to shine up at the ceiling like a lamp without them falling over. The fact that it doubles as both a flashlight and a lantern makes this product a lot more useful than the standard Coleman lantern (or a regular flashlight) to me.
For the other reviewer: to insert batteries you will need a screwdriver or a coin. There’s a big screw toward the front of the flashlight that you remove to pop off the main light and insert the batteries.
